Protect, Promote & Support Breastfeeding

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is a global alliance of individuals, networks and organisations that protect, promote and support breastfeeding based on the Innocenti Declaration and the WHO/UNICEF Global Strategy on Infant and Young Child Feeding. WABA is in consultative status with UNICEF. Its core partners are International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN), La Leche League International (LLLI), International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA), Wellstart International and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM).


Goals

• Re-establish and maintain a global breastfeeding culture
  
• Eliminate all obstacles to breastfeeding
  
• Promote more regional and national level co-operation
  
• Advocate for breastfeeding in development, women, environment and human rights programmes
  
  

Role

• Information sharing and networking
  
• To link all breastfeeding advocates: grassroots groups and individuals, UN agencies,
  governments and international NGOs
  
• To strengthen and coordinate existing activities to create more momentum
  
• To stimulate and support new and collaborative efforts.
  
  

WABA Programmes

WABA aims to develop cooperatively an exciting, workable and doable set of actions for those who wants to champion breastfeeding. WABA works closely with its network partners. Our programmes are, among others:

• World Breastfeeding Week (WBW)
  
• Mother-Friendly Workplace Initiative (MFWI) and the Maternity Protection Campaign
  
• Global Initiative for Mother Support (GIMS)
